Book Review: Guilded Cage by Sherry D. Ficklin

I've been looking for ward to the Canary Club books ever since I heard about them. It was refreshing to read get into something set in the roaring 20's, the time of pro-hibition and speakeasies. The characters are quite what you would expect from this setting, but SF immerses the reader so well into the lush penthouse and gilded night club. The pace is PERFECT for a novellete. I was never bored or waiting for things to happen. SF is one of my favorite authors and she doesn't disappoint. Except for the fact that this story is too short! Anxiously awaiting the next installment, and really excited that it's going to be with a different character.

Can we talk about this gorgeous cover for a minute? Very alluring and original. The author did this herself! Apparently she's a talented artist as well!

I had heard about this book before it was published and the story piqued my interest so I bought the ebook. Then, I happened to win a paperback copy through a give away! Woohoo!

I was a little disappointed in the beginning. The whole opening scene is very abstract. I wasn't sure why Lani was doing the things she was doing. One minute she's lying in bed taking to flies, then she sees her cousin sneaking out into the woods so she decides to follow her. (Okay, intriguing) Then Lani suddenly starts having a panic attack. What brought this on is kind of a mystery and I was bored as she was describing it.Since I didn't know what had caused her to freak out, I couldn't be scared with her. Then suddenly Lani swallows a fly and gets "Fly Girl" super powers. Pretty cool.  - Except that we never get any insight to how she feels about suddenly turning into "Fly Girl". Is she scared? Is she excited? Is she angry because she just ate one of her fly friends? Absolutley no emotions. Just a descriptive narrative of what is happening. Also, once the phenomenon disappears, it is never mentioned again or happens again for another 100 pages!

The story definitely picks up once she hits the road with her cousin and horse, traveling across the country. The scenario didn't seem very realistic, but it did have a great dystopian vibe that I have been craving lately. I believe Caroline A. Gill is a talented writer. She's great with metaphors and has a very descriptive narrative. The ending pretty much left me satisfied, but I was a little let down when there was no set up or hook for the sequel that comes out later this year.

What this story is lacking is a good content editor to fill in the gaps and plot holes. I feel like with a little more development Flying Away could have been great. It's definitely worth a read if you like stories that blur the lines of the imagination and show you concepts you've never seen before. Like magical flies!

I'm very conscious of the fact that I read a lot of the same, closely linked genres. Because of that, every few books or so I try to mix it up and read something a little more contemporary. Something without a pretty girl in a dress on the cover. With this past week being Halloween, I decided to read something paranormal. I had my heart set on werewolves, so I searched my kindle for that among my endless list of free downloads.

I must have started a dozen books and nothing caught my attention. NOTHING...except some pretty chapter layouts that didn't seem to fit with the quality of writing. Finally, I got so fed up, I decided to break my rule and start a book I've had my eye on for months.

And you know what? I'm so glad that I did. Life is short, and ain't nobody got time to waste reading something of mediocre quality and that doesn't interest them. I'm a mom, and an author myself, so I'm not giving up my daughter time or writing time for something that doesn't give me chills.

Yes, I read a lot of fantasy, especially YA, historical fiction, and romantic fantasy. Magic excites me. I love exotic worlds and quirky characters. I wish more than anything I could enroll in Hogwarts and spin around in frilly dresses all day long when I'm not off on some epic adventure. Most other stories just don't do it for me, okay? I like what I like and I can't escape it.

My point is...I tried. I tried to read something different, but it didn't work out. From now on, I'm not going to trudge through something just for the sake of variety. I'll continue to explore other genres, but my favorites will always be my favorites. I don't care if I'm dorky.

A couple of my blogger friends really liked Queen of Someday and when I went to check it out I found out it was FREE on Amazon! (at this date, it is still currently free)

I completely devoured this book. I took long lunches at work, put the kid to bed early, and kicked my husband out of the bedroom when he started wrestling with the dog in my reading space. Sherry D. Ficklin is amazing in every aspect. She gives the reader just the right amount of imagery and intrigue to keep reading to find out what happens next. One of the most important things to me in a novel is the narrative. And this author nailed it! Her voice is so captivating, I would seriously read about her describing a slice of pizza she was eating. 

The main character, Sophie, is headstrong and a bit conniving at times, but smart enough to know when to reign in her feelings. Her driving force is her need to protect and secure her family's future (like most historical fiction female protagonists) but also her growing desire for love and companionship. Boat-loads of romance in this book, as Sophie is a teenager and daydreams about every dashing young man she meets. Not really my kind of thing, but like I said, because of Ficklin's storytelling magic, I would read pretty much anything she put on paper. And in honesty, I can't really blame Sophie. I remember being the same way when I was 16. Maybe I liked this book so much because it brought back the excitement of young, tragic love.   

 A few disgruntled readers argue that this story has no plot. I disagree. Though the plot itself was subtle, lacking any disasters or sword fights, the pages turned uncontrollably. I did find one teeny snag in the ending conflict, where I was like, "Yeah, but she could just fix "that" by doing "this". But you know what? I love this book so much I don't even care. I just went with it. Oh! And did I tell you the best part?? At the end of every few chapters, there are little one minute videos of commentary from the author! Brilliant! This really gives the readers a more personable experience and insight into the true history of Cathrine the Great. I hope more authors start doing this if the concept applies to their book.

If you haven't guessed already, I'm definitely going to read the entire series. In fact, I put all three paperbacks in the series on my Christmas list. If I don't find them under the tree, I'll be soooo disappointed.

Queen of Someday is a beautiful, tragic love story, filled with satisfaction. It's a great guilty pleasure to curl up with on a cold evening with a cup of your favorite cocoa. Ahhh....

Book Review: Second Stone by Kelly Walker

I read and reviewed the first book in this series, Cornerstone, book 1 in the Souls of the Stones series about a year ago. I was happy to finally come back to Emariya and get back into her story.

I absolutely adore Emariya Warren. Her strength, her compassion, and her composure are all traits young women should admire. She reminds me of that girl you know that seems so perfect. You really want to just hate her, but you can't because you know you'd be missing out on an amazing friendship. She's not someone who drops everything to stay with the guy she's fatefully glued too. She has her priorities straight and her friends and family are at the top of that list. I cannot stress how much I appreciate this in a protagonist. It's one of the things that brought me back to this series.

Her friends, Jessa and Garith, have also started to come into their own in this sequel. They are crafted so well that I care almost as much about them as I do about Riya. I love their devotion to her, but also that they are dealing with issues of their own and their stories are growing as well. I have to admit, I am hoping a little romance sparks between the two...it just makes sense! But, that's probably why it won't happen. Oh well. We'll see.

Second Stone has all the magic of the first book and more. As Emariya and Torian explore the depth of their feelings for each other, (sidenote: so far, this is a clean series.) the romance intoxicates the reader. What's more, is that Torian's sister gets a forbidden love interest of her own! All the things that make the hopeless romantic in me "squee!"

The only down fall with this sequel, is that I almost felt like a different author wrote it. Cornerstone's prose seriously left me breathless, wishing I had just an ounce of that kind of talent. I won't say Second Stone is poorly written, not by a long shot. But I kept waiting for an amazing line that wouldn't leave my head for days, but nothing like that happened. I can't really pinpoint what's different about it, except that it just lacks the enthusiastic drive of an author being published for the first time. At least, I think that was Kelly Walker's first book. She has a popular contemporary series too, but I think Souls of the Stones came first.

Anyway, I'll be reading the next book, Broken Stone, sometime soon because I bought the trilogy pack when it was on sale. If you enjoyed Cornerstone at all, follow Kelly Walker on Facebook. She will occasionally post about giveaways, but most of all, sales on her books.

If you've yet to read book #1, Kingdom From Ashes, take a look at my review and see why I gave this story 5 stars. I've been anxiously waiting to read more about Bennua and the Raider Prince, so I was delighted when an ARC from Grypyn Publishing showed up in my inbox.

I actually finished this book awhile ago, but I've put off doing the review because I have trouble finding the right words to describe how much I love this series! The setting is so unique that I feel as though I'm being whisked far away every time I settle down to read it. Somehow I've managed to become obsessed with Bennua and Zahid the way most people obsess over celebrity couples.

Fallen From Ashes opens with their wedding and celebrations. It was quite satisfying to witness these two finally get the happiness they deserve. But the honeymoon ends abruptly when royal duties send them off on a dangerous adventure and their marriage is put to the ultimate test. On their journey, they meet up with some intriguing characters and a lot of the unexpected. Turns out the desert of Sahrahn is littered with mythical beasts and dangerous magic. The newly weds not only have to battle monsters, but also their differences in personality and faith - all while trying to keep the peace during a civil war! It's fantastic. A great story.

The only thing that annoyed me a little bit was the fact that Bennua and Zahid could have avoided so much brooding if they would have just TALKED TO EACH OTHER! At one point, I wanted to whack the two of them upside the head. Then again, I can't say that I'm not guilty of the same thing sometimes.

This book took such a toll on me emotionally. While I was reading it, I went from squealing, to biting my nails, to screaming, and then making anonymous death threats to the author. I've finally recovered and I can't wait to read Redemption from Ashes, due out this winter. Megan Linski instantly captivates the reader and holds them prisoner in this desert paradise. I devoured this story and am desperately craving more.

Book Review: Stubborn Love by Wendy Owens

I haven't really stepped out of my comfort zone with books lately. I tend to not get excited about a book unless there are promises of new worlds, magic, and adventure. I wanted to broaden my horizons so I decided to go to the New Adult section in the Kindle store and find the first free book that didn't have two half-naked people embracing on the cover. That is how I found Stubborn Love. (Although, later I found an alternate version of the cover that does, in fact, have two half naked people embracing on the cover. Go figure.)

This book is very lucky that I have a "two chapters" rule because I almost stopped reading after the first two pages. The prologue was not engaging at all. "I looked at him" was the first line, proceeded by a mess of a back story that I really didn't care about because I had no impression of the main character yet. I like to get to know the protagonist first, find a reason to care about them, and then learn about their scarred past. How are we supposed to engage with the character if we don't even know them? It's like when someone sits next to you in the doctors office and just all of a sudden vomits their life story all over you. It's much better if I can make small talk first, be introduced, and get a sense of their personality before I'm expected to care about where they came from. But maybe I'm just cold and my opinion isn't the norm.

As you can tell, that didn't make a great first impression on me. But I kept reading because I, too, come from an emotionally abusive relationship and I wanted to know how Emmie was going to handle it. There really wasn't much originality to the story. I'd heard most of it before: Young, naive girl moves to the big city to start over and pursue her dreams. She is completely focused on her goals and has no intention of finding love until a smoldering hottie falls in her lap. She spends about seven chapters playing emotional tug of war between her head and heart until she finally gives in. It is a sweeping romance until the first misunderstanding threatens a split that could have been avoided if they would have just talked to each other. But, several chapters later, all is forgiven and love wins. Then finally, an intriguing conflict arises, but it comes with no shock value since we already learned Emmie's secret on page 3. I really feel like it would have been more interesting if Emmie's tragic past and backstory had waited until the end to come forward. It could have been a hook through the whole book that would have kept the pages turning.

The saving grace for Stubborn Love was Wendy Owen's writing. Written in first person, every paragraph felt like I was catching up with an old friend. I'm going to keep an eye on this author. If she ever writes a book that seems more up my alley, I'm definitely going to give it a shot. For now, I'll stick to my warrior princesses and mythical beasts.

Review

I found out this book was free after I visited the publisher's website. It sounded like my kind of book so I downloaded it right away.

The prologue is gripping. I fell completely into the story, immersed in a fantasy realm with an interesting hierarchy and a rich history. The POV was third person, which I find rare and a little more difficult for a good writer to pull off. Davis has a steady voice and a good flow for storytelling. Rema is definitely a relate-able protagonist, and Darmik is easy to fall in love with, and Lennek is easy to loathe. Maybe a little too easy. I wish the evil characters would have been just a bit more rounded out; given some little hint of sweetness to soften their edges and make them more believable. I wanted to understand why Lennek felt the need to be so cruel, and why the king didn't really care for Darmik, his second son.

The Key was a page turner, mostly because I enjoyed being in that world so much. The kingdom and Rema really resonated with me. I wanted to return to it as often as I could, which to me is the sign of a great book. I was able to decipher the "clues" in the story long before the characters figured them out, but I get the feeling the reader was meant to have a head start. But there's still a lot of enticing mystery to fill up two more books and I'm very much looking forward to them. 

Especially because the ending really wasn't an ending at all! I'll admit I was a little miffed when everything just went black, without an explanation. I understand the hook of a cliff hanger, but I don't really feel like any aspect of the story was wrapped up. And from what I've heard, the sequel is the same way. So even if I wasn't planning on reading the second one, I definitely am now. I'm grateful the first three chapters of Red, book 2 in the True Reign series, are included at the end of the ebook.

So definitely download The Key if you love lords and ladies and princes and sword fights, but don't expect to get any sense of resolution out of it.

Sigil in Shadow is the project I've been working on for the last several months. There is no set release date, as I am working with several publishing options. This book wasn't planned, but once Ellary's story came to me it wouldn't let go. As of right now, there are no delays in the publication of Bloodstones.

Sigil in Shadow is meant to be a stand alone, one shot adventure. It's a good novel to pack in your bag for a long trip or a rainy weekend. The possibility for sequels is definitely there, but it all depends on reader demand and time. There are several books scheduled before I will have to come up with any fresh ideas. That's a good thing. A writer wants to be busy.

Book Review: Vera's Song by Natalie Erin

I was really excited when I received an ARC from Gryfyn Publishing of Vera's Song! If you're not familiar with the Creatures of the Lands series, check out my review of the first book, Kiatana's Journey.

What I really love about this series is the quirky characters. And there are a TON of them; from fairies, to shape-shifting animals, to a whole array of mythical creatures. I wish these animals could come alive so I could keep them in my backyard. Vera is indeed my favorite, a sweet, mothering dragon, staying strong in the face of trials despite the chains that hold her.

As with Kiatana's Journey, the Changers are still a little confusing. They switch forms so much, it's hard to picture what they look like in a scene. I'll read along thinking Ionan is a dragon, then realize he's been a lion this whole time. The author will start off a scene mentioning Ionan is now a Pegasus, but I'm still picturing the lion. So just make sure you keep a close eye on those pesky Changers.

I was happy to find so much emotion with the characters, which was lacking a bit with the last book. Each main character has their own story, yet Erin brings them all together flawlessly. My heart poured out for each one of them, latching onto their fear, relief, betrayal, happiness, and heartache.

As far as writing style goes, Natalie Erin is not my favorite. Her story is rich with drama and excitement, but I feel there is something lacking in the delivery. Perhaps with so many characters in the party, she's busy setting up what everyone is doing in the scene to really throw the reader in it. Her voice has grown since the first book, so I have high hopes for the series. 

Overall, Vera's Song is a fantastic sequel. Things go from bad to worse, and you really doubt everything will work out for your furry friends. Creatures of the Lands really has everything that makes a great modern fairytale and is perfect for a reader with a hungry imagination.

Book 3 is titled Wyntier's Rise, but has no release date set at this time. If you haven't yet, get yourself a copy of Kiatana's Journey and catch up.
